Chapter Seventeen
Cyri took her iPod and went down the list of songs until David Bowie's Cat People (Putting Out The Fire) was highlighted. She pressed play and let the music fill the air with some background noise. She walked into her bathroom, looking at herself in the mirror. She saw the plain black dress hang on her shoulders. She saw her pale face. She started to breathe in slowly. Yes, she was worried about that Halloween night. She knew that this is what she was praying for for nights on end. She want the nightmare that is Ratliff gone. But yet, something was holding her back. Taking a deep breath, she reached under her sink and grabbed a can of pepper spray, something she thought she would never have the opportunity to use.
She walked out of the bathroom and connect the iPod into a pair of ear buds while slipping on a pair of high heeled shoes. Then, she walked out of her bathroom and out the front door of her house. Mark and Heidi were aware that she was going to the schools Halloween dance with some friends. But that was all. As she closed the front door, she walked over to Vincent's house. When she got to the front porch and knocked on the front door, she heard a very distant enter. She knew that at that night she was going to be putting out the fire. But with gasoline?
Tad looked into the mirror in his bedroom, his mind racing as he loosened the tie that was surrounding his neck. His only fear was that this was going to be a major failure and that they will all end up in flames. He looked around at his house and surroundings, realizing that nothing after that, regardless if it is good or bad, will never be the same.
He could not figure out why his parent agreed to allow him to attend the Halloween dance. But he figured that it would be best not to ask questions and just go with the flow. His mind was also on Cyri. He hoped that she had yield his warning and not help Vincent with this terrible deed. He knew to damn well that the aftermath would be pure hell, and also be mentally hard on poor Cyri sense her variable in this entire equation would be the most dangerous and would be the overall factor if this would even be a success or failure. And he did not even want to start thinking about Vincent's bloody role. How they will eventually come out of this has been something that Tad has been thinking of. Let alone how they will come out sane. So, taking a deep breath, he walked out of his house and towards Vincent's home.
Vincent was in the spare bedroom of his house laying a few layers of thick plastic over the entire area. The chains that were in the corner were to be used later on. He looked up to make damn sure that Joan, Coraline, and Jadis equip the hooks that were going to be used. He then looked over to a corner and saw the leather bag that contained an assortment of knifes that he planned to use. He if went back in time and asked a younger version of himself if he ever was going to be doing anything like this ever. More than likely that younger version would say that he was crazy.
On the front wall, there was a freshly bought clock. The time said that it is 05:38. Time for him to get ready. When he went into his bedroom, flipping threw his C.D. collection, he found his favorite album – Black Sabbath: Heaven And Hell. He put in the disc and selected track 6: Die Young. As the song played, he took out his tuxedo and slipped into it. He and the entire gang desired to attend this little Halloween dance/ party dressed up as characters from a director Quentin Tarantino film. The only thing he hated was the tie piece that went with the suit. For some reason, it was always tight around his neck. But he could deal with that.
He went into his desk and pulled out a wooden box that contained an object that he could not believe his sweet luck that he found. One thing he learned about Tad: his mother is a grade A slut. When she decided to start dating a surgeon, Tad done what he usually did do and followed him to work, acting like he wanted to create a bond with him. When this surgeon had his back turned, Tad went and stole a few needles and a vial of anesthesia. When Vincent saw the deed that Tad done what he was asked, he was very grateful with him and also relief that they did not have to resort to sleeping pills. But, just in case something went wrong with the operation at hand, he put a few pills in his pocket anyway. Putting the box into his jacket pocket, he went down into the kitchen to fix himself a cup of coffee. While he was down in the kitchen, taking a sip of the rich, dark liquid, his mother entered the scene.
“Well, well, well,” Veronica said as she went up to Vincent and gave him a rather tight hug. “Look who's going out for once in his life.” she turned her head and gave him a quick kiss on the cheek before fixing herself a cup of tea.
“Yeah, it does pay to have friends.” Vincent went and poured some cream and sugar into his coffee and then took a large gulp. He felt the hot liquid rushing down his throat, instantly feeling the caffeine taking over his body.
“You know that girl, Cyri, she is a little cutie.” when veronica said this, Vincent gagged and started choking on his coffee.
“Mom! She is just a very closes friend. Nothing more! It is not like we are dating each other.”
“I do not know.” Veronica said as she put her cup into the sink. They were silent until there was a soft knock on the front door. Vincent, knowing who it was, yelled 'Enter!'. After a few minutes, a Gothic dressed Cyri entered the scene. Vincent felt his heart slammed to an unexpected stop when he saw her. Veronica gave an yelping squeal of delight.
“Oh, my God!” She exclaimed as she ran up and embarrassed Cyri in her arms. Vincent saw that Cyri had a look that said that she was choking.
“Thank you Ms.-” Cyri began to say.
“Veronica.” Veronica corrected her.
“Thank you, Veronica.”
“Well, I need to go know. DO any of you need a lift?” They both (being Cyri and Vincent) said no. “Alright. Vincent, if you need anything at all, give me a call.” She ran up and gave him another quick hug. She lowered her voice so that only Vincent could hear.
“Do not do anything stupid with her.” Vincent knew what she meant by 'anything stupid'.
“Mom!” He yelled. “That was no where near my mind!” Cyri started to laugh hysterically.
“Do not worry Veronica.” She said taking out that can of pepper-spray out of her mini-purse. “If he does anything stupid, as in trying to get fresh with me, I have this with me.” Veronica gave a sigh of relief. They were all silent for a few moments.
“Well, I'm going.” Veronica turned on her heel and walked out of the house. As soon as she was out, Tad walked in.
“Hey, Veronica.” He rushed by her and headed straight into the kitchen. Veronica mumbled something under her breath and then walked out of the house. When he finally entered the kitchen, He was shocked to see that Cyri was already there. He was hoping that he would be the first one there to make damn sure that nothing would or was going to happen between them (being Vincent and Cyri.).
“So, when did you get here?” He asked them both when he saw her standing next to him.
“About five minutes before you got here.” Cyri looked around before walking to the front door. Vincent and Tad followed her.
The entire decor of the Halloween dance was fantastic on a mediocre scale to say the least. Glistening from the windows on the top of the Dance room (other wise known as the Gymnasium) was flashes of black, purple, red, and orange. How they appeared against the night sky, Vincent did not like in the least. As the party of three walked towards the school, they caught site of Jadis, Maxine, Coraline, and Joan at the ticket booth. They were dresses in the same fashion as Cyri: Wear a simple little black dress.
“Hey, girl!” Jadis said excitedly as she ran up towards them to greet them. “Oh, my God Cyri! You look so beautiful!” She then eyed her two handsome escorts for a few moments. Being the heads of the party commodity was, in all part of Vincent's plan, but it also gave them the advantage that they will soon need to make sure that the operation.
“Okay, Joan,” Vincent said quickly when they were at the ticket booth. “Is he hear yet?” Joan checked the sign in log. That log was to make sure that the school had on recorded who was there that night and if anything was to go wrong, they know who to talk to.
“Yes, Ratliff is here.” Joan said as she logged in Vincent, Cyri, and Tad's names into the log. “get us when it is time.”
“We will, thank you.” The party of three walked into the cafeteria. When they reached the entrance of the area, they saw that a sign was put up on the doors. It said:
In memory of
Fron Dunn and Neferia Hodge.
Vincent thought that it was a nice touch to put that there to remind everyone of the two valuable people who lost their lives in the past few months. It also reminded the Children Of Darkness of their ultimate goal.
“Okay guys,” Vincent stopped them at the front of the gym, looked at them both in the eye. “Remember: we are not here to have a party. We are here to finally put an end to Ratliff's terror. Cyri, you know what to do when you find him. Tad, make damn sure that you have yours eyes on Cyri at all time. When Cyri lets you know that she found him, signal me immediately. You will constantly be in my sight of vision. After that, I will take care of the transportation form there.”he looked at them both. He knew to damn well that this is going to be a long, grueling, and above all, painful and exhausting night for all of them. But, in the end, they all knew that it was going to be worth it. Right before they parted, Vincent ran and hugged both of them. Tad turn afterwords and walked into the dance floor.
When they were alone, Vincent gave Cyri the wooden box that contained the needle. She raised her head and looked at Vincent. She turned on her heel and walked into the dance floor.
“God, help us.” Vincent said as he entered the stage that will determine the fate of their destiny. All of the Children Of Darkness and Children Of Ghetto's.
